yateem

that's the name of the movie i watched this morning. i have seen it once before too. last time it was at my masi's place. well, she wasn't really my masi, but my cousin's. we lived in a big joint family. so my cousin's masi was mine too, as were his/her nana and nani. anyways, this masi lived in a haveli. by virtue of her marriage. and this haveli was on the outskirts of patna and on the banks of ganga. walk out of the haveli and you could stroll in the fruit orchard, (are orchards only for fruits?), which was spread over acres of land. it was a beautiful setting for her house. anyways, she divorced him and is now settled with her second husband in dehradun. i have heard that she has an equally beautiful house there.
as a kid i had enjoyed this movie immensely. though i didnt remember the story, just bits of it. so when i chanced on it on Set Max this morning, i had to catch it. and i am happy that i did. unlike other bollywood movies, here you'll see Sunny Deol bathing under the waterfall in his unbranded boxers. him swimming in the river showing off his well built body. and Farha is standing on banks looking at him with lustful eyes. it was refreshing to see this role reversal in Bollywood. till recently, when feminism was high on my agenda, i would wish to cast men in minimal clothes. it was my revenge for what men have done to women in the show business. and for that matter i liked Om Shanti Om, the way Farha Khan made a spectacle of Shahrukh Khan's body.
i think yateem too must have been directed by a woman.

well that was my comment out of sheer excitement of reading the title & the first sentence..no obvious reason though.. On a serious note, not too sure of the director's gender bit however it equally takes the usual route of degrading women while her roving eyes & interest in other men unfolds the story further..Sujata Mehta -- Farha's nayi Ma..btw did you catch up with the next on SetMax - Tarzan..absolutely hilarious!!

to musings: ya, that bit of the step mom eyeing sunny deol was also a bit predictable. the typical thing for a vamp to do in bollywood. but i sincerely liked that scene of sunny deol in the waterwall. havnt seen such a scene in hindi cinema. i had a gud laugh too when he walked out of the water with hte wet boxer clinging to him. i hope they have more such scenes in bollywood. if for nothing more then some nain-sukh. btw, i wasnt bunking office lilke you.

It exactly need a woman director to 'expose' men in the movies. Ever noticed how Karan johar's camera makes sweet looooove to Shahrukh Khan's body? that's a man there in love with his muse :)

Ho ho what a fresh clean mind for a married woman. Chi Chi

to divya: well, i was kind of expecting such a comment to come sooner. now that you have spelled it out, it is more about the joy of seeing a man in a woman's position. and being a show piece which she has been for so many years. that's why i took so long to reply to vimsical's comment too. it's not about karan's love for SRK. because that limits karan's shots to a close up SRK's face again and again.
on the other hand, if you watch the song Dard-e-disco in OSO, SRK's jeans is on the verge of falling off. and the camera just stays on. that was my revenge to the Raj Kapoor's and so many others of the world. and to reply to you divya, i will use the oft repeated phrase: i appreciate beauty. haha.

u right as long as the director of the movie in question is a woman and you guys share the same point of view. but am sure, men loved to see farha's expression while she was ogling at the character taking a public-shower.
